The award honors the often behind-the-scenes work that is being done by some of our planets biggest champions. The winner of this award is a person or organization who has made a significant difference for our planet and it’s creatures. The award not only celebrates past achievements but it also recognizes efforts that inspire others and create living legends for the future of conservation.

The Recipient

We are proud to present the prestigious Spirit of Conservation Award to Dr. Lauren Palmer in recognition of her remarkable and tireless contributions to the field of ocean conservation over the past two decades of her dedicated and impactful career. Her exemplary work as Hospital Director and Veterinarian at the Marine Mammal Care Center has proven to be absolutely critical to saving the lives of thousands of marine animals that she compassionately cared for and expertly rehabilitated.

Dr. Palmer has a renegade spirit, experimenting with new innovative approaches and thinking outside the box for solutions to novel conservation problems. She has boundless energy and there is no task that is too small - she will often be seen in the kitchen thawing fish or on the med room floor on her knees restraining an animal requiring medical care. With impeccable ethics and a value system that always puts the animal first above all else, she inspires us to be better conservationists and to maintain our integrity in a field that too often falls short.

Beyond her impressive achievements, she serves as a profound source of inspiration to all who have had the privilege of working alongside her and learning from her extensive and invaluable knowledge and unique approach, including the hundreds of students who have since gone on to become passionate conservationists and devoted animal caregivers themselves. Dr. Palmer is truly the embodiment of the “Spirit of Conservation,” and it is with great honor and deep admiration that we present her with this esteemed and well-deserved award.
